Into the Heads of Your Characters – Point of View Workshop

with Multi-Award-winning Author Terry Odell

Date: Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 2 PM Mountain Time/ 3 PM Central Time

Most readers probably aren't aware of the ins and outs of Point of View. They may not notice things like deep or shallow Point of View, Point of View switches, Point of View characters or head hopping. So why bother? Because, it's possible that these readers will put down your book and say, "I don't know why, but I just couldn't connect." And they won't buy the next one. Telling a good story is important, but it's the characters that most readers connect with. Good characters can make up for a mediocre plot, but a fantastic plot won't work if nobody cares about your characters (with a few rare exceptions). How do we make our readers care? By getting into our characters' heads. Using examples, exercises, and handouts, this interactive workshop will explore how Point of View, especially Deep Point of View, will connect readers with characters.

Terry Odell began writing by mistake, when her son mentioned a television show and she thought she’d watch it so they’d have common ground for discussions. Now she’s a multi-published, award winning author of over thirty novels, novellas, and short stories. She writes mysteries and romantic suspense, but calls them all “Mysteries With Relationships.” Her awards include the Silver Falchion, the International Digital Awards, and the HOLT Medallion. A Los Angeles native, she moved to Florida where she spent thirty years in the heat and humidity. She now enjoys life with her husband and rescue dog in the cooler, dryer climate of the Colorado Rockies, where she watches wildlife from her windows. You can learn more about her and her books at her website, terryodell.com, or her blog, Terry’s Place.
